Welcome to the
Hooker Memorial Library
Webpage!
The ministry of the Hooker Memorial Library of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church is to encourage and enrich Christian growth by providing a library program within the church. The library collection includes Christian fiction, non fiction materials and reference resources for all ages.
It is known that Jarvis Memorial had a library as early as the first decade of the 20th century. Over time it has been located in numerous places throughout the church and at times non existent. The most recent reestablishment of a church library came about in 1963 when church members catalogued the 200 books at that time. In 1967, Mrs. Lois Patterson was asked to lead as volunteer librarian and remained in the position until 1995 when she retired and the position fell to another church member. Our library has continued to grow and expand though the dedication of committed volunteers working weekly. The library is named for the Seth Tyson Hooker family, who had been members of this congregation before the beginning of the twentieth century, and whose son William Howard Hooker has made generous donations to the library in memory of his parents over the years as a friend and benefactor.
Currently the library houses over 8000 books and 700 DVDs and videos. We also provide our members with audio tapes, Bible studies and a Library Mobile Outreach (LiMO) for those unable to come to the church library.
At this time Jarvis Hooker Library is bursting at the seams and our shelves are full but we provide a Christian educational program to all who visit or call:
