One Day with God Camp
a BIG Success!
As all who participated know, Saturday, October 27th, was a memorable and spiritually inspiring day at Jarvis Memorial. In February 2007, Scottie Barnes (photo left), Director of "Forgiven Ministries", and Ann Davis, from the Jarvis Church and Society Committee, visited Green Correctional Center and Scottie presented a proposal for a "One Day with God Camp" at Jarvis Memorial. The proposal was well received by the Center’s superintendent and staff and planning got under way.
Green Correctional Center brought 17 dads to spend a day with their children. Thirty-three children of inmates were in attendance. The caregivers of the children were also invited and had special programming designed just for them throughout the day. "One Day With God Camp" is intended to provide Christian activities which gives the dad and child a chance to reflect and restore their broken relationships.
"One Day with God Camp" was actually the climax of a two-day event: On Friday, October 26, the dads were brought from Green Correctional by prison staff for a spiritual enrichment Bible study led by Scottie. Jarvis hosted and provided lunch for all in attendance.
On Saturday, October 27, caregivers of the children, the dads, prison personnel, and over 150 volunteers from Jarvis gathered. In the Taft Christian Life Center the dads and their children participated in a day of Christian activities involving games, crafts, quiet spiritual sharing time. A motivational guest speaker from the Harlem Globetrotters offered encouragement to fathers and children, and a touring clown troop inspired smiles all around. In the fellowship hall of the main building, the caregivers had a time of sharing, Bible study, motivational guest speakers, crafts and an appreciation lunch.
Pastor Albert Shuler said the 2007 "One Day With God Camp" was a huge success and a great example of ministry, outreach, and witness. In his words, "we hope to make this an ANNUAL EVENT at Jarvis".
